Women: Choice and Change Overview

The primary purpose of the Women: Choice and Change program is to provide a safe space to allow women to mutually aid one another, whilst looking at behaviours, expectations and needs within their family and intimate partner relationships.

Trained female facilitators lead the group in brainstorming, goal setting and self-reflection and a key component of the facilitation is to encourage discussion and assist members of the group to find newer, healthier ways of thinking about themselves and their situations.

The Women: Choice and Change program operates to empower, support and educate women under the three spaces indicated in its name.

Through participation in the program, women will have:

Women; Identified who they are and what they want in relationships moving forward, clarified what constitutes a healthy versus unhealthy relationship, developed a better understanding of their own and others feelings, developed an understanding of the experience of anger in themselves and the ways in which they respond to anger in others.

Choice; developed an understanding of how choices can lead to unhealthy relationships, become aware that change is possible and identified alternate choices that lead to better/healthier outcomes.

Change; have enhanced self-esteem, the ability to be consciously assertive, learned to nurture themselves in constructive ways and developed an understanding of and strategies to overcome obstacles to change, and a comprehensive resource manual for future reference

DRUMBEAT is the world’s leading therapeutic drumming program supported by independent research and evaluations.

Karralika Programs have trained staff members that facilitate DRUMBEAT over a range of programs. Following the Commonwealth Government election in September 2013, the old Departments of FaHCSIA, DEEWR and Indigenous Coordination Centres (ICCs) no longer exist. All Indigenous programmes have been consolidated under the Office of Indigenous Affairs in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Aunties and Uncles (CareSouth)

The Aunties and Uncles program links community volunteers with children up to 13 years of age from families who could benefit from support. Generally the child or young person is given an opportunity to experience life with another family by spending one weekend a month with them. The program is based on the belief that giving time, friendship, care and guidance can help build a child’s self-esteem and confidence. Trained coordinators assess and screen adult volunteers and evaluate the needs of socially and emotionally disadvantage families, and link them together for ongoing support, providing children with friendship, role modelling and time out from stressful situations.
