What are the values that drive you?
Leadership and Courage are probably the values most prominent for me. Particularly to be able to communicate authentically and effectively about the importance of the work we do and the need to do it well. I try to be fearless in making the difficult decisions particularly in the face of dissent. I strive to demonstrate the principled behaviour and attitude that I want to see in others and I also try to remember to recognise and acknowledge achievements (both of mine and of others) and express encouragement and support which is so important for anyone to hear.
What is something in the Alcohol and other Drugs Sector must deal with that you want to fix?
We must create a greater and more prominent positive profile in the discourse of the magnificent, life changing contribution that AOD services, and the staff working within them, make in changing the lives of those who are impacted by AOD use. We need a formula for attraction and promotion which creates opportunities for out of the box collaborations, partnerships and funding streams to continue to improve the essential services that we deliver. I would like to see mechanisms developed for alcohol and drug workers to gain professional standing (to attract and retain workers in the AOD field) given the skills and knowledge required to work in such complex environments. I would also like to see specific AOD residential and other programs for older people and an expansion of services for parents with children which ensure the inclusion of specialist practitioners as standard requirements.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Mainly being with my children and our dogs. I love to travel, though lately my travel has been on foot around some of the gorgeous areas near where I live. I am also a collector of things – mid century, kitsch, old stuff that strikes my fancy.
